These memorial pins were made by artist Melanie Shapiro (based in Oakland, California). There is a pin for each victim–stating their name and age. In thinking about the fire, Melanie was struck particularly by their ages and wanted to create a simple, straight-forward visual reminder of their individuality while marking the tragedy that they all shared.
