The women & men in this book defied the social & moral conventions of their times to follow their vision of justice—many in early 20th c. America. Rose Schneiderman is famous; Carola Woerishoffer is unknown. Florence Kelley fought for women’s, children’s & workers’ rights; Mary White Ovington helped found the NAACP; Sara Josephine Baker revolutionized child healthcare; Luisa Capetillo organized Puerto Rican laborers & Jovita Idar worked for Mexican American rights. Lugenia Burns Hope brought community services to African American Atlanta.
