The Scalabrinians, an order of priests serving Italian immigrants, opened Our Lady of Pompei in 1892 as the chapel of the Saint Raphael Society for the Protection of Italian Immigrants. In 1898, Pompei moved to 214 Bleecker Street, a Greek Revival building erected in 1833 as the Third Unitarian Universalist Church and most recently occupied by the African American Roman Catholic congregation of Saint Benedict the Moor.
