This is a photo of me carrying a shirtwaist made to honor Santina Salemi, one of the victims of the Triangle Fire, at the 100th anniversary commemoration ceremonies at the site of the Asch Building in New York City on March 25, 2011.

Commentary

Santina was a 24 year-old, single woman, who emigrated to the U.S. from Italy with her father Gracomo and mother Marie. She lived here for 9 years before her death. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Carrying a shirtwaist for Santina, from the beginning of the march to the Triangle Factory to the end of the ceremonies at the site, helped me connect to the event in a very personal way. I wondered what her life had been like and how tragic it was that it was cut so short solely due to the greed of her employers and neglect of the government.
